Influenced by many movies set in Old Shanghai in the 1930's (such as Wong Kai Wai's "In The Mood For Love""2046", Stanley Kwan's "Center Stage" and so on), I am interested in Shanghai in the period. Old Shanghai was a very special time and place. The city was run by foreigners but was not a colony, most residents were Chinese but it was not ruled by China. It received many western fashionable things, when it still keeps its traditional culture.
So I picked up one of the most representative figures--Ruan Lingyu, who was one of the most prominent Chinese film stars. But like many stars in whenever past and present, Ruan's private life was mercilessly seized upon by tabloids and her on-going lawsuit with her first husband became a source of vindictive coverage. Faced with these public issues as well as with intense private problems, Ruan poisoned herself in Shanghai onMarch 8, 1935, at the age of 24.
Her death is caused by these rumors. That sounds unbelievable in modern society, but in the particular time and place, it's possible to happen to women who just aparted from feudal society.
I tried several forms to represent her tragic life, like some illustrations in different medium. Finally, I designed a room which expresses the suffering life that she has to endure rumors everyday. I designed the wallpaper pattern which is made of words of gossip as the last two images shown.
