Animation

The animtion is a silhouette animation.
My aim is to create a short animation which could raise awareness of the pollution issue and communicate the effect of pollution.
The animation is about a butterfly's trip in polluted enviroment. I want to make these ugly pollted things in a beautiful shape then the butterfly breaks these false appearances.

butterfly from Hong Zhang on Vimeo.

Here are my storyboards.

It's a sample I did that my animation should be.

The first sequence. A butterfly stops on a flower. Everything is peaceful, so I use light green as background colour.

There is a pond with lotus, active fish and small waves. The butterfly stops on a lotus.

Then water surface rises, the lotus and leaves are flooded.

There are some hills which are constructed by lots of gabages.

The butterfly flies to a flouriching tree. But when it stops in the tree, thousands of flies fly away. The tree is already dead.

Then many plastic bags come.

Some of them catch in the dead tree, floating in air.

Then we see the butterfly find a flower at close quarters. In fact, it's just smoke emitted from factory chimney.

The smoke surrounds and swallows the butterfly.

In the end, the butterfly is eaten and disapears with smoke.

illustrations

Three illustrations above are works of fashion&life style illustration module. I drew the life style of these people (especially eastern) who love traditional culture. The combination of tradition and modern is interesting and brilliant.

Illustrations below are figure sketches in my free time.

Shanghai

This project is about Shanghai.
Influenced by many movies set in Old Shanghai in the 1930's (such as Wong Kai Wai's "In The Mood For Love""2046", Stanley Kwan's "Center Stage" and so on), I am interested in Shanghai in the period. Old Shanghai was a very special time and place. The city was run by foreigners but was not a colony, most residents were Chinese but it was not ruled by China. It received many western fashionable things, when it still keeps its traditional culture.
So I picked up one of the most representative figures--Ruan Lingyu, who was one of the most prominent Chinese film stars. But like many stars in whenever past and present, Ruan's private life was mercilessly seized upon by tabloids and her on-going lawsuit with her first husband became a source of vindictive coverage. Faced with these public issues as well as with intense private problems, Ruan poisoned herself in Shanghai onMarch 8, 1935, at the age of 24.
Her death is caused by these rumors. That sounds unbelievable in modern society, but in the particular time and place, it's possible to happen to women who just aparted from feudal society.
I tried several forms to represent her tragic life, like some illustrations in different medium. Finally, I designed a room which expresses the suffering life that she has to endure rumors everyday. I designed the wallpaper pattern which is made of words of gossip as the last two images shown.

Dialogue

My work is an installation. The project is about "Dialogue". I give it a name,"I am... what am I?" The work that I did is a dialogue between my inner personality and outer expression.
I made a plaster model of my face, and took some photos of my face in many expressions and painted them in different colours different patterns. Then I used a projector to show these exaggerated expressions on the model to achieve distorted effect.
